Articles of the Week(4/7)

A handful of articles you may not have read this week.

"Bush's 'Apex' of Unlimited Power"

President Bush has decided that, as president, he can do whatever he wants and that no law can stop him. No law anywhere in the whole wide world. (No joke.)

"Bermuda Shorts and Homeland Insecurity"

Guess who was awarded the $10 billion USVISIT contract. Accenture - formerly known as Andersen Consulting. You may remember Arthur Anderson from Enron, World Com and so on. The best part? Now they're offshoring in Bermuda so they don't have to pay taxes on that $10 billion!

"'Fahrenheit 9/11' Gets Standing Ovation"

What's this? Has hell frozen over? Satan must be shivering in his little red booties, because Fox News's Roger Friedman LIKES Fahrenheit 9/11. He called it "brilliant" and "a tribute to patriotism."

"9/11 panel sees no link between Iraq, al Qaeda"

Remember last year before the war in Iraq, when Bush told us that Saddam was helping aid al Qaeda? Remember on June 14, 2004, when VP Dick Cheney said that Saddam had "long-established ties" with al Qaeda? The bi-partisan 9/11 commission says "Pull your head out!" Okay, so they actually said "We have no credible evidence that Iraq and al Qaeda cooperated on attacks against the United States."

"Memo that Ashcroft Won't Release"

Look! It's that pesky memo that talks about detainee interrogation and torture policies and how the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to the United States because it's not "federal law." The entire memo is 53 pages, but it gets right to the point at the very beginning.

"Great Communicator, My Ass"

If you were born in the 80s or late 70s, you probably don't remember a lot about Ronald Reagan. Now that he's dead, lots of people will call him a great leader and compare him to Bush.

"Killer, Coward, Con-Man. Good Riddance Gipper...More

Proof Only the Good Die Young." Greg Palast speaks ill of the dead. It sounds like Palast was more inspired by Death Cab for Cutie than Billy Joel. “Just cause he's gone it doesn't change the fact he was a bastard in life thus a bastard in death."

"The Jesus Factor"

Okay, so this isn't an article, it's a website for the PBS Frontline documentary of the same name. You can watch the hourlong program on the website (recommended!), as well as read extended interviews from people on the show and information about topics such as the history of religion in the White House. Fascinating! (No, really!)

"Awkward Kerry, Hopeless Bush"

Young, single women don't vote. 22 million registered young women didn't vote in 2000. Now both candidates are courting young women, hoping to bring those votes their way in November. Sadly, Kerry probably won't use the slogan "I'm hung like a donkey!" as part of his bid for the ladies.

"HUD snubs Chicago Heights again"

Chicago Heights won't get new public housing. What's this got to do with the Bush administration? Chicago is overflowing with (and run by) Democrats. Key states that played a role in getting Bush in office in 2000 (like Florida) receive the bulk of HUD grants. Even if that's just a coincidence, Hope IV funding (for public housing) has decreased by almost $300 million. Screw you, poor people!

"Saving money not a Pentagon priority"

An editorial discussing no-bid contracts and how a lack of competition drives prices through the roof. "Funny how this Congress can get so upset over the cost of education and Medicare, but can't lift a finger when it comes to where the real money is being spent." So true.

"Climate Change Experts Despair Over US Attitude"

"One-third of earth at risk of desertification - UN"

Both articles discuss environmental policy and what the world could end up like if we continue to run blindly in the same direction we've been going. The first directly discusses US policy.
