May 30 - NVLB Welcomes Laurel Anne Greenidge
Today we brought aboard Laurel Anne Greenidge as the editor of our "Get Educated" page. She'll be writing a weekly column for that page and also providing us with articles that deal with a wide range of political topics. Welcome aboard, Laurel!
May 26 - Keepin' It On the Down Low
We're getting a ton of interest in the festival, from bands far and wide. We can't announce any of them yet, but suffice it to say that we have no doubt that a lot of these shows are going to be sold out WELL in advance. Right On !!!
What's that? You want me to divulge identities? Sorry everyone; can't do it. You'll just have to keep an eye on our website for an upcoming announcement.
May 21 - Out of Town Friends and a Candidate Suggestion
To all of the folks out there who would like to throw a NVLB show in your town: don't despair, DIY materials are in the works! We're just working out the legalese. As soon as we're done translating plain English into said legalese, we'll be posting the kit to our new and improved website (which goes live June 14).
I've got a hot tip for those of you living in Georgia: check out John Barrow (http://www.barrowforcongress.com). He's running for Congress in Georgia's 12th District. You might wonder why I'm bothering to endorse a candidate from a state that is thousands of miles and light years away from Seattle. Well, while this year our main task is defeating W., we are also advocating the reclamation of Congress. As the Republicans have demonstrated, it's a lot easier to get things done when your party controls all three branches of government. Next on the agenda: the Judicial Branch.
May 9 - NVLB Receives Fan Mail!
Well, since our party I've been receiving tons of emails supporting us in our cause and asking to be put on our mailing list. Hang tight folks, I'm working on a newsletter that I hope to have finished by next week…it might even contain photos!
I also received this email from an adoring REM fan (the REM guys were nice enough to put a link to our website on their website. Thanks guys!) which sums up, quite succinctly, many conversations I've been overhearing at the bar. Here it is, in its' entirety:
i wanna vote against gwb....but no necsarroly for the nother dem///i
dont wanna waste my vote rem #1 fan from NJ
c ya later alligator ? REMROCKSNJ
Hey, I hear you loud and clear REMROCKSNJ, but in this election we don't have the luxury of sitting it out or voting for a third party candidate in order to make a statement. There's just too much at stake. Can the country withstand another four years of full-frontal assault on our civil liberties, economy, environment, reproductive freedom, and international relationships (and that's the short list) by the dissembling theocrats currently running the show? I don't believe so, now's the time for us to stand up to these bumbling fascists and take our country back.
I think something to keep in mind, REMROCKSNJ, is that true regime change is a long-term project. We are not going to root out twenty years of corrosive right wing politics in one election. But we can start ourselves on the right path by throwing out the neocons currently squatting in the White House and electing a president and Congress who more accurately reflect the views of the majority of the American people.
This speaks to the main goal of NVLB: we are here to support progressive candidates across the country. As I said, this is a long-term project. We are committed to assisting candidates who promotes a sane foreign policy that does not immediately resort to military solutions for diplomatic disputes, whose policies respect all members of society, not just the wealthiest 1%, preferences the common good over big-money corporate interests, and encourages social tolerance.
Take heart REMROCKSNJ, we will prevail; we just have to dig in our heels and not forget out ultimate goal…total regime change!
May 4, 2004 - No Vote Left Behind Throws Debut Party
Last night's debut party was fantastic. I want to thank everyone who came out to support us in our project, the Crocodile for hosting us, and the bands playing for us. We here at No Vote Left Behind are honored that y'all agreed to play our humble shindig. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Speaking of bands, the Divorce was awesome. They are one of my favorite local bands and some of my favorite people - they're just so damn CUTE!! Their set last night consisted of all new material, which totally rocked the house. Well done fellas! They're looking for a label to release their new material, so if any of you would like to put out a great record get in touch with them…www.thedivorce.net.
The silent auction was such a success that we here at NVLB have decided to start an on-line NVLB auction featuring all sorts of cool stuff donated by our loving music community. Think of it as an Ebay for the politically conscious music lover in all of us. Look for this feature soon on our website.
In closing I would like to give a big shout-out to our designer Christi Williford. She kicked major ass in getting all of our posters, postcards, business cards, banner, and web-site design materials together. I got tons of compliments on our posters last night, way to go Christi! If you like her work, send some business her way. She started her own graphic design firm recently, Elemental Studio, and I'm sure she'd love to talk design with you. Just shoot her an email at Christi at elementalstudio dot com.
